You would like to come to Germany to study, but the classics like law, economics or engineering are too dull for you? Then maybe this list is just what you are looking for: We have put together the most unusual (and usually also rarest) courses of study in Germany. Perhaps you will discover your absolute dream subject among them.
The 14 Most Exceptional Study Programs in Germany
1. Technology of Cosmetics and Detergents
At first this may sound like a make-up and cleaning lesson, but in reality the course of studies primarily provides knowledge about the formulas and manufacturing process of cosmetic products and detergents. Thus, the contents move between natural sciences, engineering and economics. Graduates usually work in different areas of the cosmetics industry later. “Technologie der Kosmetika und Waschmittel”, as it’s called in German, is offered at the TH OWL in Lemgo as Bachelor of Science.
2. Applied Sexology
Sexology and then applied? Don't worry, this is not about what might come to your mind at first. In fact, in this Master's program topics such as sexuality and partnership, family planning and Co are treated from a sociological perspective and in the context of possible counselling activities. All this is "applied" because the part-time course is mainly organized through project work. “Angewandte Sexualwissenschaft” (in German) is offered by the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences.
3. Brewing and Beverage Technology
Beer is probably considered typical German all over the world - so it's no wonder that you can even study its production and composition here, right? Depending on the university, the course of study is made up of economics, food chemistry, mathematics, biology and physics. The TU Munich offers both a Bachelor and a Master of Science (both called “Brauwesen und Getränketechnologie”), the TU Berlin offers a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Engineering (“Brauwesen” meaning Brewing) and the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences offers a Bachelor of Engineering (called “Brau- und Getränketechnologie”).
4. Applied Leisure Science
Unfortunately, unfortunately, studying applied leisure sciences – or “Angewandte Freizeitwissenschaft” as it’s called in German – does not mean that you have all the free time. Instead, interdisciplinary content from the fields of social, economic, natural and legal sciences is taught here, as well as supplementary content from the fields of computer science and foreign languages. All this is intended to prepare you for work in the leisure and tourism industry. The Bremen University of Applied Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts and an English taught Master of Arts (“International Studies of Leisure and Tourism”).
5. Equine Sciences
You've always been a real horse person? Then maybe this course of studies is yours! The equine sciences are usually located in the department of veterinary medicine and are mainly concerned with the species-appropriate handling and keeping of horses, but also with agricultural engineering, feed science or horse breeding. Afterwards you can work in stud farms or breeding associations, but also in authorities or offices for agriculture. A corresponding Bachelor's degree (“Pferdewissenschaft”) is offered at the FU Berlin. You can also complete a Bachelor in “Pferdemanagement” (horse management) in Osnabrück or in “Pferdewirtschaft” (horse economics) in Nürtingen as well as a Master in “Pferdewissenschaft” (equine science) at the University of Göttingen.
6. “Space Master”
If you have always been passionate about space and space travel, then the “Space Master” is probably just the right thing for you: Here you will learn about planetology, robotics, sensor technology and space ship construction. Graduates are usually employed in space research, space technology or even the automotive industry. The master's degree is offered at the University of Würzburg.
7. Oenology
Oenology is all about wine, especially its production. During your studies you will learn in an interdisciplinary manner from the fields of agricultural science, the biology of vines and grapes, business administration, microbiology and much more. With your degree you can become a wine producer. The University of Applied Sciences Geisenheim offers a Bachelor of “Weinbau und Önologie” (viticulture and oenology), a Bachelor of “Internationale Weinwirtschaft” (international wine business) and one called “International Wine Business”. In Ludwigshafen you can also complete a Bachelor in “Weinbau und Önologie” (viticulture and oenology) and a Master in “Wine, Sustainability & Sales”.
8. Toy and Learning Design
The fact that playing is extremely important, especially for children, can hardly be denied. Of course it is also important what is played with and how. In the Bachelor course “Spiel- und Lerndesign” (toy and learning design) at the Kunsthochschule Halle you will be trained exactly for this: to develop and design toys.
9. “Game Design”
This course of study is also about playing games, but in its digital version: In the “Game Design” course you learn aspects of computer science, media technology and media design as well as game development, level design or graphic programming. It is also about writing scripts and considering psychological basics of games. Interested? There is a Bachelor “Game Design” at the HTW Berlin, the Mediadesign Hochschule Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich as well as the media Akademie Stuttgart. At the Macromedia Akademie in Munich and Stuttgart there is also a Bachelor in “Game Design und Development”.
10. Conference Interpreting
You would like to be heard via a button in ones ears at conferences? For that, you have to become a conference interpreter. Then, for example, you translate lectures live. However, “Konferenzdolmetschen”, as it’s called in German, is only offered as a Master's degree. In your Bachelor's degree you should have studied interpreting or the languages you would like to offer as an interpreter. There is a corresponding Master's degree at the University of Mainz, the University of Leipzig, the University of Heidelberg and the TH Köln.
11. Urbanism
The name says it all here: The Urbanism program deals with different aspects of spatial planning in urban areas. This also involves interdisciplinary content from the fields of urban planning, spatial research, monument preservation, architecture and social science urban research. Jobs are located in the field of urban planning, at government offices, in planning offices or in consulting. “Urbanistik” is offered as a Bachelor's degree at the Bauhaus University Weimar.
12. Jewelry
Necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and so on and so forth, all this has to be designed by somebody. A good prerequisite for working in this field is a degree in jewelry or jewelry design. You can graduate with a bachelor's degree at the University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim (“Schmuck”). The University of Applied Sciences Trier also offers a Bachelor “Edelstein und Schmuck” (gemstones and jewelry) and a Master “Gemstones and Jewelry”.
13. “Cultural Landscapes”
If you are interested in traveling and the differences and similarities between different regions, you should get your ear to the ground here. This special master's degree is offered in a cooperation of the University of Würzburg with the University of Thorn/Torun Poland and Flagler College in Florida and comparatively deals with the origin, expansion and further development of cultural landscapes in Europe and the USA. In order to apply, you should have a Bachelor's degree in history or with history as your main subject and very good English skills.
14. Puppetry
Yeah, you can make a living doing puppet shows. The best way to do that is to study “zeitgenössiche Puppenspielkunst” (contemporary puppetry) at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst in Berlin. Contemporary in the sense that not only the classical hand puppetry gets its place, but also, for example, the use of digital media, performances, acting and storytelling.
