All you need to know about co-insurance of family members

A good health insurance is essential for a carefree and safe stay in Germany - not only for you, but also for your accompanying family. This blog post explains how you are able to insure your family members.

Who can take out an insurance policy?

If you are a student, doctoral student, participant in a preparatory language course, job seeker after completing your studies and are not older than 45 years, you can insure yourself with VELA. You will find help in choosing the right tariff for you in our blog post. You can also insure your family members (e.g. children and spouses) if they are not working.

How does the registration work?

You can take out the insurance cover online. After you selected your tariff of choice and entered your personal data such as your name, address and date of birth, you can add further persons, such as your family members. Then you decide for an appropriate contract payment method. Afterwards, you can check your information again before submitting your final application. Please note that your family members must always be insured in the same tariff as you. If, for example, you decide on the Optimal tariff, your relatives will also be insured in the Optimal tariff.

What if my family comes to Germany later than I do?

If you did not insure your children or your spouse directly when registration at ours, you can also do so later. In order to do so, please log in to your customer account and use our contact form. To enroll relatives later, we only need their first and last name, date of birth, nationality and gender.

Is my child insured as well, if born within the term of the contract?

Your newborn child is insured in the same tariff as you once it has been born. However, this only applies if your insurance contract has been in force for at least three months without interruption, no other insurance cover exists for your child and you report the birth to us within two months after the date of birth. Your child is then insured from the very start as well. An email to info@vela.insure in which you provide us with the necessary data (first and last name, date of birth, nationality and sex) is completely sufficient.

If you do not meet these requirements, your child will also be insured after the waiting periods have expired, at the time specified in the insurance policy. The general waiting period is three months (with the exception of accidents and measures to avert acute danger to life).

How much does the co-insurance of my family members cost?

The contribution depends on the age of the insured person and the respective tariff.

What happens if I cancel my VELA contract?

With VELA you can insure yourself for up to five years, calculated from your date of entry into Germany. Of course, it is always possible that you want to cancel the contract, e.g. because you leave Germany earlier than planned or because you decide for another provider. When the main contract is cancelled, the contracts of the co-insured relatives end automatically.
